Incognito Mode (end-to-end Encryption)

By default end-to-end encryption mode is not enabled in Google Allo. It is selective, weather you want to chat securely, end-to-end encrypted or not. These are the few features that make the user agree to use Google Allo and enjoy its tempting features. But if you are concerned to privacy the Google Allo is not for you. Let’s see.

Why you should not use Google Allo

Right before I talked about the Google Assistant feature in Google Allo. So, how will it work as a personal assistant? Let’s say who can be the personal assistant? The one who knows everything about you and your activity, Right?

Here, to work Google Assistant as a personal assistant means feeding information to it, to work for us better. Here, information is in terms of your conversation, your responses, your activity, the way you interact and what not. Your privacy is lost and you are vulnerable. So, Google records all the non-incognito conversation.

According to Google, the change was made to improve Allo’s smart reply feature, which generates suggested responses to a given conversation. Like most machine learning systems, the smart replies work better with more data. As the Allo team tested those replies, they decided the performance boost from permanently stored messages was worth giving up privacy benefits of transient storage. according to The Verge

A Google spokesperson said in a statement:

“We’ve given users transparency and control over their data in Google Allo. And our approach is simple – your chat history is saved for you until you choose to delete it.”

“You can delete single messages or entire conversations in Allo. We also provide the option to chat in Incognito mode, where messages are end-to-end encrypted and you can set a timer to automatically delete messages for your device and the person you’re chatting with’s device at a set time.”

Summarized point for why you should not use Google Allo

  • End-to-end encryption is not implemented by default and is optional (selective)
  • Google Allo records everything, except in incognito-mode
  • Your privacy is compromised
  • Interprets your data and generate responses

If you are good at sharing your data and have enough trust on Google than enjoy these amazing features by downloading Google Allo for Android or iOS now. If you are concerned about privacy than it could be a pretty good decision to ditch Google Allo. Share your reviews in comments. Keep sharing. Stay tuned to Tech Tunes.
