Online privacy has become the major concern in today’s world. It’s hard to stay anonymous online over the internet but still there are the ways through which this can be achieved up to extent. Here are the ways I am sharing through which you can achieve the online anonymity. Let’s start with basic entity we are using that is our browsers.

How To Stay Anonymous Online

Web Browsers

This is one of the most basic entities you are using for connecting yourself with the online world. You would be using the most popular browser like Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer. Among few popular browsers provides you the facility to browse the internet through incognito browsing or private browsing, which does not store your history or cookies. But this feature is limited to history and cookies and does not make you anonymous or hide your IP address.

To achieve online privacy, you need to change the browsers you use. There are many browsers that provide you much more privacy and anonymity. The most popular is the TOR browser which routes your traffic through the secure tunnel and provides you anonymity. The other I would like to recommend are Comodo Ice Dragon (Firefox), Comodo Dragon (Chromium), Comodo Chromium Secure (Chromium).

Everyone use mails and they would be using one or another mail services for the communication. Many of you would be using the popular mail services like Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Hotmail. Though you use the mail service over the private browsers like TOR its quite impossible to obtain the anonymity as it have and store your mobile phone numbers. If you do not want to allow the mail providers to read your un-encrypted communication than you can use the various browser extension to send and receive mails. The mailvelope extension which is available for both Mozilla and Chrome browser which routes your mail over TOR anonymity network and provide encryption and decryption facility at both end respectively. The Enigmail and TorBirdy are the extensions which provides a same interface for OpenPGP email security as mailvelope but this extensions are only limited to Mozilla Firefox.

The above was the guide regarding the popular mail service you use and do not want to switch to more secure and private mails like hushmail, protonmail, tutanota, runbox. These were some of the mail services that are more concern with security and privacy.

Suppose the situation arise that you do not want to disclose your personal mail address or information and you still want to communicate than you can use the temporary disposable services like Guerrilla Mail, which allows you to send and receive the email from the temporary created mail through Guerrilla Mail service without disclosing any personal information. It also let you scramble your mail address into unreadable format. Use such mail services over TOR to ensure complete anonymity. Other than Guerrilla Mail there are many temporary disposable email services like AirMail, TempMail, ThrowAwayMail, Mailinator, YopMail. This is how you can gain anonymity over email online.

Operating Systems

Your anonymity can also be ceased based on the operating system you use or it is installed on your PC. Use live operating system instead of installed operating system. The speciality of these live operating system is that they can be booted from Dvds , pendrive or through usb in order to gain the anonymity over the internet. Use the OS that does not store your information. There are certain operating system that provide you with the full benefit of anonymity online. Various Linux distros that are specially designed for privacy, anonymity and security are TAILS, Whonix, Anonymous OS. The major advantage of using these OS is all the traffic is routed over the TOR network and once you shutdown all your data is unavailable.

Search Engine

The majority of users over the internet uses Google, Bing for searching the content. These search engines are fast and accurate and provides personalized results based on the past searching patterns of the users. Means the search engine tracks and records the searching pattern of the user, hence store data of the users searching patterns. To avoid these tracking you need to switch to the different search engine. The DuckDuckGo is a search engine that promises to never track your search queries and provides privacy to the users.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) benefits you by providing the enhanced online privacy and security. Generally, VPN hides your real IP address and route your traffic to the secure and encrypted virtual tunnel. No one can cease the your location you are actually browsing from. There are number of free and paid VPN available like CyberGhost, TotalVPN, TunnelBear, HideMe, SurfEasy TorGuard.  Opera browser has integrated in browser VPN service, know more.

Manage Trackers

When you surf on the internet, your online activities, your cookies everything is being tracked by various companies. To know when and by whom your being tracked than you can do this by installing the browser plugin called Ghostery. Use Ghostery to know that when you are being tracked and by whom. One you know than you can easily block them or you can take appropriate actions. With the help of this plugin you can know the trackers easily. Ghostery is available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE.

If you want anonymity than you need Tor. Tor is the customize Firefox browsers comes with pre-loaded privacy extension that route your traffic securely with encryption over the network. You can easily start using Tor by downloading Tor Browser Bundle. But Tor alone cannot promise you the most of the anonymity. To achieve more anonymity, start using Live OS, do not install plugins, avoid popular mail services over Tor, use DuckDuckGo search engine. These are some of the pills you need to take and of-course there would be much more.

Other than above mention methods for achieving anonymity online there are few more to go. Always use https connection headers. Always user private mode or incognito mode provided by the latest browsers. Avoid using credit cards online for payment to avoid compromising your identity. Use Virtual Machines as much as possible. Avoid using Social Media. Block javascripts by using Noscript browser extensions to avoid leaking personal information.
